More than 38 million Americans fish and hunt. Men and women, young and old, and everyone in-between love fishing all across the United States, but Florida is home to a special love of this great sport. Although people are always after the record-breaking catch like this guy, you don't need to catch a fish bigger than your boat to enjoy your time.
According to GrindTV, Jon Black was fishing in a small kayak in Florida when he ended up coming across a fish larger than anything he could've ever imagined. Black's reaction quickly went viral, because it was a nice mix of sheer terror and excitement, but the main reason the video went viral was because of the size of the catch.
Black caught an estimated 552-pound grouper that was 83 inches long and 73 inches in girth.
"I thought he was going to kill me," said Black.
Fishermen know that you're not going to catch a gigantic fish every time you go out, but that's not their main motivation for fishing. The reason fishing is so popular across the world and certainly in Florida, is because of the camaraderie, the peacefulness, and for the love of the outdoors.
"Florida is proud to be the Fishing Capital of the World," said Florida Governor Rick Scott.
Staugustine reports that Scott made a license-free fishing announcement for the first few days of April in order to encourage people to continue getting out in Florida waters.
"If you've never been fishing before, this is a great opportunity to get out there and give it a try," added Brian Yablonski, Chairman of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, "Or, if you're a seasoned angler, take a friend or family member who has never been."
